Anna Marie (Miti / Oma) van Wettum - Berkhout

March 28th, 1931 (Batavia / Djakarta, Indonesia) -  November 3rd, 2022 (Ottawa, Canada).

Born to G.J. Berkhout (1895 - 1982) and A.M. Berkhout - Roldanus (1902 - 1983)

Married to Alfred Ernst van Wettum (1924 - 2012), from July 4th, 1952 to October 12, 2012.

They had 4 children, 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Oma spent most of her first 23 years in Indonesia, where she got married, bought their first house and started a family. She worked for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

After a brief return to Holland, the family moved to Karachi, Pakistan for nearly 5 years.

Then returned to Holland, living first in Amstelveen with family, then in Voorhout.

In 1964, the family moved to Montreal, Canada (City of Beaconsfield).

With the challenges of bringing up her young children in a country she knew not much about including the language, going from the tropics to Canadian climate, and a loving and supportive husband who was working hard and away on business a lot, she stayed strong and was an amazing mother and wife.

Oma was very close to the family in Holland, and there were frequent trips home to see her parents, siblings, nephews, nieces and in-laws. Family was important to Oma.

Oma (Miti to friends) had close friends in Beaconsfield. From neighbours on Woodside Crescent and Sherbrooke Street to friends from the Bridge league, yoga and swimming.

Often holding the fort while Dad was away on business. All year around Oma could be seen at her kids' soccer, baseball and hockey games.

In 1968 the family moved to Sherbrooke street in Beaconsfield, where Oma lived at "273" for the next 50 years.

Oma enjoyed watching / listening and going to Montreal Expos games.

Oma was an amazing cook. Her Rijsttafels were amazing and devoured.

Dad retired in 1982 and they enjoyed traveling together.

Avid Bridge players they played for many years and made life-long friendships.

Oma usually had a family photo album with her, in case anyone asked....

After the love of her life passed away in 2012, life was never the same for her. She got a cat (Puti) who was her loyal companion until the end.

The signs of dementia started, and she was moved to Ottawa for personal care.

End of October 2022, as best as can be determined, she had a stroke and soon after passed away peacefully in her sleep.

A special thank you to Oma's two amazing caregivers, Ella and Rhea. They were there for Oma 24/7 and allowed Oma to live her last few years with dignity, comfort and love.

Kind, giving, caring, proud, sweet, funny and loving is how she will be remembered by family and friends.
